Terminal fails to start - why?

Terminal may fail to start due to one of the following reasons:
1.Data Base Kernel (BDE version 2.52) is not installed or a wrong version is installed. It is necessary to install BDE version 2.52. Copy it from Megasoft's server (www.rvs.ru) and install on your PC.
After you have installed BDE 2.52, restart your PC.

2. TCP/IP support is not installed. It is necessary not only to connect with Internet, but to operate Terminal. As TCP/IP installation is necessary to get connected with Internet, your Internet provider should give proper consultations concerning its installation.

What connection type should be chosen in Parameters?

User should choose Connection Type to connect with RVS server: Menu=>System=>Internet=>Connect.

Brief description of Connection Types:

  • No connection - connection with RVS server is blocked. This type should be chosen in case that several Terminals, sharing the same data base, work in the local net and the on-line session is initiated from only one computer that has access to Internet.

  • Direct connection or Dial-up via a modem - should be chosen if your PC is directly connected with Internet or you use a modem connection (Dial-up).

  • In case that Terminal is installed on PC in a closed local net, the following Parameters should be applied:

    Connection via Proxy-Server - implemented by SOCKS protocol, with standard port 1080 assigned. Choose "Connection via Proxy-Server" (System=>Internet=>Connect), then - into Address area - write the address of the proxy used to get connection.

    Another, more complicated, way to solve this problem is to use Readdress function.
    The cardinal solution to connect with RVS server is to install a chosen PC having free access to Internet out of the local net.

    How to operate Terminal in the local net?

    As many Terminals as you like can be installed on the local net, with only one of them registered. The on-line session to publish requests is carried out from the registered Terminal using its name. On-line sessions initiated from unregistered PC only allow receive requests from RVS System. When connected in the local net, all Terminals share the same Data Base and a special program informs them of new requests coming.
    TCP/IP protocol is a must for all PC to work in the local net, even if these PC are not supposed to establish connection with RVS server.

    To provide correct operation of several PC in the local net, it is necessary to do the following: switch off BDE caching on PC where the registered Terminal is installed. To do so, choose TRUE for LOCAL SHARE parameter in BDE. Do it step by step:

  • отключение кэширования в BDE на компьютере с зарегистрированным терминалом РВС. Для этого необходимо в ядре базы данных BDE для параметра LOCAL SHARE установить значение TRUE, для этого нужно выполнить следующие действия:
    1. Run bdecfg.exe (it is stored on disk C in the folder containing BDE related files that is usually named IDAPI);
    2. Choose from Menu - "Pages | System";
    3. Choose TRUE for LOCAL SHARE (PARAMETERS=>LOCAL SHARE (second from the top)=>TRUE);
    4. Chose "60" for MAXFILEHANDLES (MAXFILEHANDLES(second from the top)=>60);
    5. Save the chosen Parameters: "File | Save";
    6. Exit the program: "File | Exit";
    7. Restart your PC.

  • general access to the disk on that the registered Terminal's Data Base is installed should be permitted;

  • on PC with unregistered Terminals the accessible disk should be marked as a network one;

  • on PC with unregistered Terminals it is necessary to chose "No Internet connection" (Menu=>System=>Internet=>Connect=>No Internet connection).

  •

    How to establish connection via a proxy-server?

    Terminal is able work via a proxy-server by means of the standard SOCKS4 protocol, with the standard port 1080 assigned. If Terminal fails to establish connection via a proxy-server, that most likely means that SOCKS4 is switched off (this protocol support many proxy-servers). An independent SOCKS-server can also be installed.

    How to implement Readdress function?

    If you get Internet connection from the local net and your System Administrator sticks to maximum protection policy, you can use Readdress to get connected with RVS servers.
    First of all, you should open several ports on your fire wall and adjust Redirect Connects to the chosen port to our servers: a1.rvs.ru, b1.rvs.ru, c1.rvs.ru, d1.rvs.ru, to the port 12801 (RVS-Bills) or 12821 (RVS-Metals), 12802 (RVS-Stock), 12810 (RVS-Zerno/Grain).
    Then Readdress should be chosen as Connection Type: Menu=>System=>Internet=>Connect=>Readdress. Then write your server address and the ports (opened by System Administrator), those Terminal will call, on the fire wall.

    Why do some messages appear?

    "You are working with Data Base from an unregistered Terminal" - two variants this message appears:
    1. When working in the local net from unregistered Terminals of the version beta 12, or above. In this case you can only make the message pop up less frequently: Menu=>System=>Data Base=>Scanning=>[chose some greater time value]. As the frequency of scanning is equal to the frequency of appearing the above message, pauses between its appearing will become longer.
    2. The above message also appears in case that your Data Base contains requests received by a registered Terminal (i.e., without 8-hour delay), with your registration data missing. For example, if your Terminal files were transferred to another disk or PC, or rvsX.ini file was deleted. If the disk or PC was changed, you should contact RVS System Administrator and get re-registered (408-8354 - for RVS-Bills' users; 408-8154 - for TVS-metals', RVS-Zerno/Grain's users, etc.).
    If the Terminal files location was not changed, it is enough to write the registry information - i.e. the registry number and the associating key - into the registration form (Menu=>System=>Registration). If you do not remember the necessary information, you should contact Administrators by the above telephone numbers and ask for the data.

    "On-line session is already established or Data Base error":
    Immediately after this message has appeared, the on-line session window with an indicator showing renewing Data Base non-completed process should open. If the indicator shows the process progressing (even though slowly), you should wait for a while till the process is completed. If indicator shows no changes for over 10 minutes, you should perform the following actions:
    1. Close the on-line session window;
    2. Restart your PC;
    3. Repair your Data Base (Menu=>System=>Data Base).

    How to avoid connection problems?

    If the on-line session gets disconnected at the moment of accessing to RVS server, provided that the breaks between the attempts to establish connection are less than the adjusted down time (System=>Internet=>Connection Type), the following reasons should be considered:

  • Wrong Connection Type is chosen (Menu=>System=>Internet);

  • Proxy does not support SCOCKS4 or is incorrectly adjusted;

  • While performing Readdress function - the wrong RVS server is pointed (the server address could possibly be changed).

    If breaks between the connecting attempts are equal to the applied value(System=>Internet=>Connection Type), the following reasons are possible:
  • The adjusted down time value is not enough. You should increase the value (Menu=>System=>Internet=>Connection Type). Otherwise, there is no use choosing the time value exceeding 100 sec.
    You can also try to increase a number of attempts to establish connection with the server.

  • Your Internet provider has problems with connection.

  • System Administrator forbade the connection to all our servers via SOCKS4-proxy. There are four of them: a1.rvs.ru, b1.rvs.ru, c1.rvs.ru, d1.rvs.ru, to the port 12801 (RVS-Bills) or 12821 (RVS-Metals), 12802 (RVS-Stock), 12810 (RVS-Zerno/Grain).

  •

    What should be done to preserve the registration data in case of a repeated Terminal installation?

    You should inquire about your registration information (registry number, associating key and Terminal number) from RVS Administrator (408-8354 - RVS-Bills, 408-8154 - RVS-Metals, RVS-Zerno/Grain). This data should be entered into the registration form (System=>Registration). Then press OK, and a message warning that you have changed your registry number will pop up. Press OK again and you will see one of the two following messages:

  • "You are successfully registered" - it means that you are allowed to go on working with Terminal in a registered mode.

  • "Wrong associating key" - it means you should check for mistakes in your registration form. If this message keeps on appearing, you should contact Technical Support Service and ask for re-registration.

    Terminal was re-installed on another PC or disk.
    You should contact Technical Support Service for re-registration.

    Why do problems with Data Base occur and how to Repair it?

    What usually cause Data Base problems?
    Data Base structure can be damaged by incorrect exiting Terminal (PC buzzing or shutting down PC without closing Windows, power supply fail and so on). To minimize the risk of Data Base breaking down, it is strongly recommended to switch off Data Base caching (see the item "How to operate Terminal in the local net?"). Sometimes damaging Data Base proves to be a result of some irrelevant programs calling Data Base files under operation conditions. Among these programs may be such backup ones, as a file indexing program helping to quickly search in MS Office 97 (it is necessary to delete this procedure from Autoload), viruses detecting, disk optimizing, etc. In this case Data Base is under permanent threat of frequent damaging.

    "Data Base is already being used" - to avoid this error, it is necessary to:

  • close Terminal;

  • open RVS\DATABASE.1 folder (default location - disk C:);

  • delete all the files beginning with "P:",

  • restart PC.

    It is recommended to repair Data Base after you have launched Terminal next time.

    Some Terminals are not visible. (In a submitted request Terminal area is empty.)
    This error surfaces when Data Base Client Catalogue is broken down. To solve the problem it is necessary to restart PC, start Terminal and repair Data Base (System=>Data Base).

    While repairing Data Base the messages like "Key violation", "Not exact read/write", "Corrupt index", "Couldn't find record", etc. appear. Data Base Repair should be undertaken only after your PC has been restarted. If you fail to restart your PC, repeat your attempt to repair Data Base after restarting. In case that the mentioned messages keep on popping up, you should reinstall Data Base. To reinstall Data Base you should start install.exe and choose the installation variant "Data Base only" (at the second step of installation procedure). After it has been done, you can go on receiving data from RVS server. When reinstalling, the registration is preserved.
    In the process of renewing Data Base (black indicator - in the left lower corner of the on-line session window - showing progress) your PC buzzes (indicator has stopped progressing and does not change for long).This situation is called the Data Base breakage. To improve the situation, you should repair Data Base.

    How to repair Data Base?
    The below conditions are a must to correctly repair Data Base:
  • Interactive Connection Type should be chosen (System=>Internet=>Connection Type);

  • Also, do not forget to preliminarily restart your PC.

    To repair Data Base, press "Repair" button in the right lower corner (Menu=> System=>Data Base).

  •

    Other problems

    If the following messages appear: "Protection error" or "General protection fault...", you should restart your PC. If Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 is installed on your PC, you should, firs of all, close Terminal, then end all RVS relating tasks in Task Manager. After you have started Terminal next time, it will be necessary to repair Data Base.
